What Is a GTM Engineer? Role, Skills, Tools, and When to Hire vs Outsource

A GTM engineer builds the automations, data flows and AI workflows behind a revenue team. What the role covers, what job posts ask for and pay, and when to hire one or outsource the work.

A GTM engineer builds and runs the systems a revenue team works on: lead enrichment, account lists built from buying signals, outbound workflows, CRM automations and the connections between tools. GTM engineering is that work treated as engineering. The role overlaps heavily with RevOps but leans toward building new workflows, and job posts pay a median of $127,500.

The title is new. Bloomberry, which analyzed GTM engineering job posts, credits Clay with coining it, and counted 205% more GTM engineering job posts in January to September 2025 than in the same months of 2024. Several of the pages that rank for the term are written by Clay agencies and tool vendors, so they tend to describe the role through one product. This guide covers the job itself, what the data says companies ask for, and the decision most founders face: hire one, or get the work done another way.

What does a GTM engineer actually do?

The Bloomberry analysis ran every GTM engineering job post through a language model and ranked the responsibilities. The top three were building and automating GTM workflows, integrating the GTM tool stack, and owning or optimizing the CRM. Only 1.4% of posts mentioned cold calling. The job is building the machine. The selling stays with the sales team.

In practice, the work falls into five kinds of build:

BuildWhat it doesTypical tools
Lead enrichmentFills in company size, tech stack and role before a seller sees a new leadClay, Apollo, ZoomInfo, the CRM
Signal-based listsTurns events like a new funding round, a new executive or a job post into a list of accounts to contact this weekClay, intent data, website visitor tools
Outbound workflowsDrafts messages from the research, loads sequences and routes repliesClay, AI models, Outreach, Apollo, sending tools
CRM automationRoutes leads, updates stages, creates tasks and keeps fields cleanHubSpot, Salesforce, Zapier, n8n
Reporting and dataMoves data between the CRM, product and warehouse so pipeline numbers can be trustedSQL, Python, BI tools such as Looker

A good week for a GTM engineer ships one new workflow and fixes whatever broke in the old ones. The second part gets less attention, and it is where most of the value goes missing. An enrichment flow that silently stops filling in company size will degrade lead routing for weeks before anyone notices.

How is a GTM engineer different from RevOps?

Less than the title suggests. Bloomberry compared GTM engineer posts with RevOps engineer posts and found that 9 of the 10 most common GTM engineer responsibilities also appear in RevOps postings. The differences are in emphasis:

  • RevOps posts lead with CRM ownership and call out forecast accuracy as its own responsibility. Bloomberry found 76% of RevOps postings mention it.
  • GTM engineer posts lead with automation and integrations, put the CRM third or fourth, and emphasize outbound and prospecting.

A useful way to split the two inside one company: RevOps keeps the system of record correct and the forecast honest. The GTM engineer builds new ways to create and work pipeline on top of it. In a small company, one person does both. Our RevOps guide for SaaS covers the operations side in depth.

What skills and tools do job posts ask for?

The same analysis counted the tools named in GTM engineer job posts. Clay was the most common, which is not surprising for the company that coined the title. After it:

ToolShare of GTM engineer job posts
HubSpot52%
Outreach49%
Salesforce45%
Zapier39%
SQL38%
Python38%
Apollo29%
n8n28%
Gong23%
Looker17%

Source: Bloomberry, analysis of GTM engineering job posts, last updated January 2026.

Posts asked for 4.11 years of experience on average. The tool list matters less than three skills behind it:

  • Knowing what a good outbound motion looks like. A workflow that books meetings needs the right accounts, the right reason to reach out and a message a buyer would answer. Someone who has never sold builds clever workflows that send the wrong thing faster.
  • Debugging data. Most broken GTM systems are data problems: duplicate accounts, empty fields, a sync that stopped. SQL is the fastest way to find them.
  • Keeping things running. Every automation is a small piece of software. It needs monitoring, a person who gets the alert, and a fix the same day.

How much does a GTM engineer cost?

Bloomberry’s look at posts that published a salary range found a median of $127,500 a year. The top of the market is far higher: Vercel advertised $252,000 and OpenAI $250,000. Those are base salaries in job posts, before benefits, payroll taxes, equity and tools.

The tools are a real line item. A GTM engineer’s stack usually includes an enrichment tool, a data provider, a sending tool and an automation platform, each billed separately. Our Apollo vs ZoomInfo comparison shows how far data costs alone can range, from $49 a seat a month to a five-figure annual contract.

Should you hire a GTM engineer or outsource the work?

It depends on how much there is to build and whether anyone can direct it.

SituationBetter fitWhy
Proven sales motion, 10+ sellers, a long list of workflows to buildHire full timeEnough work to fill the week, and the knowledge stays in the company
Early stage, still testing which channels workOutsourceExperiments change monthly. A full-time salary sits idle between them
A few specific processes to build and keep runningOutsourceYou pay for the processes, not a full salary
No one senior to set priorities for the roleOutsource firstA GTM engineer without direction builds what is interesting, not what moves pipeline
Strict data rules or a complex internal data warehouseHire, or pair a hire with outside helpNeeds deep access and context that is hard to hand to a vendor

The trap is hiring a GTM engineer to fix a go-to-market plan that does not exist yet. Automation makes a working motion faster. It makes a broken one fail faster and at higher volume. If you cannot name your best customer profile and the reason they buy, start there. Our GTM strategy guide covers that first step.

An illustrative first 90 days

Illustrative, not a benchmark. The company is fictional.

Lumen Ledger sells accounting automation to mid-size finance teams and has six sellers. Its first GTM engineer spends the quarter on three builds, in order:

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: clean the CRM. Merge duplicate accounts, fill in industry and employee count, and fix the lead routing rules that sent a third of demo requests to the wrong seller.
  2. Weeks 5 to 8: signal-based lists. Every Monday, a list of target accounts that posted a controller or FP&A job in the last week, with the right contacts enriched and loaded into the CRM.
  3. Weeks 9 to 12: drafted outreach with review. For each account on the list, an AI-drafted first email that opens with the job post, reviewed by a seller before it is sent. Replies route to the account owner in Slack.

Each build depends on the one before it. Signal lists are useless if they land in a CRM full of duplicates, and drafted outreach is risky without clean contact data. That ordering is the part most teams skip.

Where Growigami fits

Growigami does this work as a service, built and run by former CROs. Our Automations service builds the automations between your tools and keeps up to 20 running, with new ones added each month, on Zapier, Make, n8n or your CRM’s own workflows. Each process starts at $1,999 a month. Read how we approach it on our growth engineering and marketing engineering pages. If you do hire a GTM engineer, the same order applies: prove the process by hand first, then automate it.

Frequently asked

What is a GTM engineer?

A GTM (go-to-market) engineer builds and runs the systems a revenue team works on: data enrichment, account lists, outbound workflows, CRM automations and the connections between tools. The role sits between RevOps and engineering. It builds new workflows rather than only administering the CRM.

What is GTM engineering?

GTM engineering is the practice of building go-to-market work as automated systems instead of manual tasks. Typical builds include enriching new leads before a seller sees them, turning buying signals into account lists, drafting outreach with AI and routing replies to the right seller.

How much does a GTM engineer make?

Bloomberry's analysis of GTM engineering job posts that published a salary range found a median of $127,500 a year. Top-paying companies in that data, such as Vercel and OpenAI, advertised $250,000 or more. The same analysis found posts asked for 4.11 years of experience on average.

Is a GTM engineer the same as RevOps?

The work overlaps heavily. Bloomberry found that 9 of the 10 most common responsibilities in GTM engineer job posts also appear in RevOps engineer posts. The difference is emphasis: RevOps posts lead with CRM ownership and forecast accuracy, GTM engineer posts lead with automation, integrations and outbound.

Do GTM engineers need to code?

Often, yes. SQL and Python each appeared in 38% of GTM engineer job posts in Bloomberry's analysis. Many workflows can be built in no-code tools such as Clay, Zapier or n8n, but the better-paid roles expect someone who can write a script or query a database when a tool runs out.

Should we hire a GTM engineer or outsource?

Hire when you have a proven sales motion, enough workflows to keep one person busy full time, and someone senior to direct the work. Outsource when you need a few specific processes built and kept running, or when you are still testing which motions work and a full-time salary would sit idle.
