What AEO means
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is writing and structuring a page so that a search engine or AI assistant can lift a direct answer from it. The target is not the blue link. It is the answer box above the links: the featured snippet, the People Also Ask panel, the spoken reply from a voice assistant, and the AI Overview at the top of Google.
The shift matters because answers now sit in front of results for a large share of searches. Google said in July 2025 that AI Overviews had over 2 billion monthly users across more than 200 countries and territories. If the answer is shown on the results page, the page that supplied it is the one that gets named.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO
The three terms overlap, and vendors use them loosely. This is the split we use, because the work for each is different.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank the page | Be the extracted answer | Be cited or named by AI chat tools |
| Where it shows | Organic results | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice answers, AI Overviews | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot |
| Unit of work | The whole page and the site | The question and its answer block | The facts, data and brand mentions across the web |
| Main levers | Relevance, links, technical health | Question headings, 40 to 60 word answers, tables, lists, structured data | Original data, clear claims, being mentioned on sources AI tools read |
| How you measure | Rankings, clicks | Answer features won, impressions, brand named in the answer | How often assistants name you for your buyers’ questions |
Treat AEO as a layer on SEO, not a replacement: start with the pages that already rank and make their answers easier to quote. GEO adds a third layer, mentions of your brand on other sites. For the AI-citation side, see our entry on generative engine optimization (GEO), and our GEO vs SEO comparison for how that work differs from ranking a page.
How to structure a page for AEO
- Use the question as the heading. Write the H2 the way a buyer types or says it: “What is a deal desk?”, not “Deal desk overview.”
- Answer in the first 40 to 60 words under it. One complete answer that makes sense if it is the only thing quoted. Definition first, nuance after.
- Put lists and comparisons in real lists and tables. Steps and comparisons in HTML lists and tables are easier to quote cleanly than the same content buried in a paragraph.
- Add an FAQ with the follow-up questions. Take them from the People Also Ask box for your term, and mark them up with FAQ schema.
- Keep one question per section. Each section should stand alone, so any one of them can be quoted without the rest.
- State facts with sources. A specific, checkable sentence is a better candidate to quote than a hedge.
- Keep it current. Add the update date and refresh numbers when they change.
The answer block, before and after
Illustrative, not a benchmark. The company is fictional.
Brightwater Payroll’s page on “payroll audit” opened like this:
“Payroll is one of the most important functions in any growing business, and getting it right matters more than ever…”
Nothing in that opening can be quoted as an answer. The rewrite:
“A payroll audit is a review of payroll records to check that every employee was paid the right amount, on time, with the right taxes withheld. Brightwater recommends one every year and after any change of payroll provider.”
The second version answers the question in two sentences, uses the term in the first line and can be quoted on its own.
How to measure AEO
- Answer features won. For your list of target questions, check which ones show your page in a featured snippet, People Also Ask box or AI Overview. Rank trackers report this, or check by hand for a short list.
- Named in the answer. In AI Overviews, note whether your brand or page is cited, not only whether a link appears. AI visibility tools run a fixed prompt list on a schedule and report this for you.
- Impressions vs clicks. In Google Search Console, a page that wins answer features often gains impressions while clicks stay flat or fall.
- Branded search. If answers carry your name, more people search for it later.
Plan for fewer clicks per impression. In a Pew Research Center study of 900 US adults’ Google searches in March 2025, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when it did not, and clicked a link inside the summary in about 1% of visits. That is why AEO is judged on being named, not on traffic alone.
How Growigami does AEO
Our AI search and SEO service writes the pages AI answers draw on, such as comparisons, use cases and plain definitions, built to rank on Google as well. Each month we ask the assistants your buyers use the questions they ask, and show you which answers name you and which name a competitor.
Common questions about Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
What is answer engine optimization?
AEO is the practice of structuring content so that Google, voice assistants and AI tools can pull a direct answer from your page and show it to the searcher. It focuses on clear questions, short direct answers, tables, lists and structured data.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
The terms overlap and many people use them as synonyms. A useful split: AEO targets answer surfaces inside search (featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice answers and AI Overviews), while GEO targets citations in generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini. The same page can serve both.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO works on pages that search engines already find and trust, so it sits on top of SEO. What changes is the goal: being the quoted answer, not only the blue link.
How do you measure AEO?
Track which target questions show your page in a featured snippet, People Also Ask box or AI Overview, and whether you are named. Also watch impressions versus clicks in Search Console: answer features can raise impressions while clicks fall, because the searcher got the answer on the results page.
Is AEO worth it if people don't click?
Often yes, because the answer carries your brand name to buyers who never visit. But plan for fewer clicks. A Pew Research Center study found people clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when it did not. Measure AEO on visibility and branded demand, not only on clicks.
