The line: one record per pallet, from the receiving dock to the outbound trailer.

Dockmere is cold chain compliance software for food warehouses. It reads the sensors a warehouse already has and keeps each corrective action on the same record as the reading, so an audit pulls one report.

  • Who it is for: directors of operations and QA leads at cold storage warehouses and food distributors with 2 to 20 buildings. ICP: 31 deals
  • What it is: software that logs every reading from the dock and the rooms, with each excursion and its fix on the pallet’s record. 14 of 22 calls
  • What it replaces: the clipboard by the dock door and the binder a QA lead builds the week before an audit. 11 calls
  • Why we win: setup is seamless because Dockmere reads the probes already installed. Why we win: setup takes a day per building because Dockmere reads the probes already installed, where sensor vendors start with new hardware. 9 calls, 3 sites

43%

of VC-backed startup shutdowns since 2023 with a known cause had poor product-market fit as a factor (CB Insights, March 2026)

Why it matters

Poor fit factored in 43% of VC-backed shutdowns

CB Insights studied 431 venture-backed companies that shut down since 2023. Of the 385 whose reasons it could identify, poor product-market fit was a factor in 43%. A fractional CMO cannot find that fit for you, so the hire comes once early customers buy for the same reasons.

A fractional CMO for startups is a part-time marketing executive who sets positioning, the ideal customer profile and the first channel to prove. GrowTal puts a typical engagement at $6,000 to $12,000 a month. At Growigami, your fractional CMO builds one process first, and AI agents run it every week from $1,999 a month.

What does a fractional CMO do at a startup?

The Geisheker Group, a firm cited in Google’s AI Overview for this search, lists five things a startup fractional CMO owns. They are positioning, the ideal customer profile, the first repeatable channel, measurement and the first marketing hires. O-CMO’s stage guide has a similar list and adds budget.

Both draw a line at production. O-CMO says a fractional CMO should not spend most of the engagement as your copywriter or media buyer. Geisheker puts it plainly: “Execution belongs to your hires, your agency or freelancers.”

For a startup with no marketer on staff, that leaves the work with nobody. O-CMO’s guide flags the same gap: an empty execution line can call for a hands-on hire next to the CMO, or in its place. The role in general is on our page about fractional CMO services.

When should a startup hire a fractional CMO?

Once early customers start to look alike, and before marketing needs a full-time executive. O-CMO maps it by stage:

  • Pre-seed or before product-market fit: keep customer learning with the founder. The useful fractional CMO mandate is a narrow diagnostic or positioning workshop.
  • Seed or early traction: a fractional CMO is worth considering if the gap is strategy, such as defining the ICP and choosing the go-to-market bet. If the plan is already clear, O-CMO points to a hands-on marketer.
  • Series A: fractional leadership can fit when spend and channels grow faster than anyone coordinates them.
  • Series B and later: a fractional leader for a defined transition, and a full-time leader when the work is continuous.

The Geisheker Group adds signals that the moment has arrived. You have paying customers who look alike. You raised a round, and the deck assumes marketing will produce pipeline. Spend goes to ads or content, and nobody can say which of them started a sales conversation.

CB Insights’ shutdown study is the reason to respect that order. Of 431 venture-backed companies that shut down since 2023, 385 had a cause it could identify, and poor product-market fit was a factor in 43% of those.

Who does the work when a startup has no marketing team?

On 5 November 2026 we read seven of the pages Google showed for “fractional cmo for startups” in the US (Ahrefs snapshot, 21 October 2026). They are the six organic results in positions 2 to 8 and The Geisheker Group’s guide, which the AI Overview cites. All seven come from companies that place or sell fractional CMOs: six guides or listicles and one marketplace service page. One firm lists its own fee, and none says who approves the work before it goes out.

O-CMO’s scoping checklist asks “Who will execute?” before a startup hires anyone. Growigami’s answer is AI agents, working on a process your fractional CMO built with your team.

O-CMO also lists “the founder approves every campaign” as a sign that leadership is missing. Approval at Growigami goes to whoever owns the piece. Your seller reviews and sends the outbound. Each person approves their own posts, and you approve the ads.

One process first: how a startup starts with Growigami

The Geisheker Group’s advice to startups is to “start with one” channel and prove it before adding a second. Growigami’s offer works the same way.

  1. Within a week: the proposal. With read access to your CRM, we come back within a week with the process we would build first and what it would produce.
  2. By about week three: the build. Your fractional CMO sets the process up with your team, and it is usually running by then. A process costs $500 more in its first month while we build it, and your first build is on us this month.
  3. Each week: the work. AI agents research and draft, so the work gets done without a marketing hire.
  4. Once it proves itself: the next one. Add a second process, or keep running one.

Which process a startup should start with

Pick the one that matches the gap in your pipeline:

  • The deck promises outbound pipeline. Start with Outbound: 500 target accounts researched a month, each message opening with a reason to talk now. Your seller reviews, then sends.
  • Buyers ask ChatGPT which tool to pick. Start with Search: 200 pages a month, or 500 on the larger size, each written to rank on Google and to earn citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity.
  • The founder is the brand. Start with Social: three posts a week for the founder and one more person, plus your company page, written from short calls and voice notes.
  • You have budget for ads. Start with Paid: up to $25,000 a month of ad spend managed on two channels, with up to two new landing pages a month.

A startup that needs a site first can buy the website, a one-time build from $7,499, before any of these.

What the optional fractional CMO review adds

The review is a standing session where your fractional CMO goes through the whole system with you and tunes it on the numbers. Monthly sessions are $1,499 a month and weekly ones $2,999 a month. On the monthly plan you can message them in Slack between sessions.

Skip the review, and your team steers while we keep each process running. A startup watching its runway can begin with the process alone and add the review later.

How much does a fractional CMO for a startup cost?

The ranking pages and the firms behind them give these figures:

  • GrowTal’s Series A guide (February 2026): a typical engagement runs $6,000 to $12,000 a month, and a full-time Series A CMO can exceed $220,000 a year before bonuses and equity.
  • Data-Mania: $5,000 to $20,000 a month, or $60,000 to $240,000 a year, against about $390,000 a year for a full-time CMO.
  • The Geisheker Group: from $10,000 a month with a 90-day minimum, and a one-time audit for $10,000 as well.
  • CMOx: full-time CMOs average $275,000 to $375,000 a year before bonuses and benefits, on its homepage.

The lowest monthly price at Growigami is $1,999 for one process. With a monthly review that comes to $3,498 a month, and with a weekly review to $4,998 a month. Ad spend on the Paid process is paid at cost.

For hourly rates and retainer ranges, read the fractional CMO cost guide. Every process and its price is on our price list.

CabFare hit $20K MRR and NaviNurses hit quota in 60 days

CabFare’s app lets a taxi or limousine driver take a card payment on a phone. Before the work started, the product was finished and nobody was using it: Facebook ads run in house had spent $3K for fewer than 20 installs. Video ads then beat static ones by 3.2x on cost per install, and drivers and fleet owners each got their own outbound campaign. Monthly recurring revenue went from $0 to $20K in four months (CabFare story).

“I get a whole team with the skillset I need at the moment I need it.” Arthur Argyropoulos, Founder, CabFare

NaviNurses, a platform where families hire a registered nurse for care at home, had a new sales team and no defined buyer to point it at. It took everyone who called, mostly from word of mouth. Strategy sessions defined the ideal client, then webinars, content and outbound aimed at that client together. The sales team reached full quota in 60 days (NaviNurses story).

When a startup should hire someone else

Four situations call for someone else:

  • You are before product-market fit. Keep marketing with the founder and talk to customers. At most, buy the narrow diagnostic or positioning workshop O-CMO describes for that stage.
  • The plan is clear, and you want one person in house. Hire a first marketer to carry it out.
  • Marketing needs daily leadership. Hire full-time. The fractional CMO vs full-time CMO comparison covers when to make the switch.
  • Sales is the gap. A fractional CRO owns the sales team and the forecast.

Questions

Common questions about fractional CMOs for startups

How much does a fractional CMO for a startup cost?

GrowTal puts a typical fractional CMO engagement at $6,000 to $12,000 a month, and Data-Mania gives a wider range, $5,000 to $20,000. The Geisheker Group starts at $10,000 a month with a 90-day minimum. At Growigami a startup pays from $1,999 a month per process. Each process costs $500 more in its first month while we build it, and your first build is on us this month. An optional review adds $1,499 monthly or $2,999 weekly.

How much does a CMO at a startup make?

A full-time CMO at a Series A startup can make over $220,000 a year before bonuses and equity, in GrowTal's figures. CMOx puts full-time CMO salaries at $275,000 to $375,000 a year before bonuses and benefits, and Data-Mania puts the full-time total at about $390,000 a year. Fractional CMOs are paid a monthly fee, which comes to $60,000 to $240,000 a year in Data-Mania's range.

Is a seed-stage startup too early for a fractional CMO?

It depends on whether the founder still has to learn who buys and why. The Geisheker Group says seed is usually too early for that reason. O-CMO draws the line at product-market fit: keep customer learning founder-led before it, and consider a fractional CMO at seed when the gap is strategy and the plan is not yet clear.

How many hours does a part-time CMO work for a startup?

GrowTal says most fractional CMO engagements run 10 to 20 hours a week. O-CMO says there is no universal hour count and advises scoping the time around the decisions and outputs the role requires. At Growigami the price is set per process, so the agents' weekly work does not depend on your fractional CMO's hours.

Should a startup hire a fractional CMO or a first marketer?

Hire a fractional CMO when the missing piece is direction, and a first hands-on marketer when the direction is set and the gap is execution. That is O-CMO's split, and it notes that some startups need both. At Growigami your fractional CMO builds one process and AI agents run it each week. Positioning ($4,999) and an ICP plan ($4,999), if you need them first, are one-time builds.

Should a startup hire a fractional CMO or a marketing agency?

O-CMO's rule: hire an agency when the channel, the audience and the brief are already clear. Hire a fractional CMO when someone has to decide them first. At Growigami one contract covers the fractional CMO who builds a process and the AI agents that run it each week, with a minimum of three months.

What is the 80/20 rule for startups?

Investopedia defines the 80/20 rule, or Pareto principle, as the idea that 80% of outcomes come from 20% of inputs, and notes that the split is approximate. Its business example fits a startup: when 20% of customers bring 80% of revenue, market to that group and find more buyers like them. Growigami applies the same idea to channels, so a startup starts with one process and adds the next once it proves itself.

How do you find a good fractional CMO for a startup?

Look for someone who has built a repeatable channel from a small base, as The Geisheker Group puts it. Ask what they would stop in your first month and how they would measure the first channel test. O-CMO adds two checks: a seed-stage candidate should work well with a small execution bench, and each candidate should walk through a past situation like yours.

Start with one marketing process.

Give us read access to your CRM. Within a week we show you the first process your fractional CMO would build and what it would produce.
