What does the Census count in the Richmond metro?
The Census counts the Richmond, VA metro area as 13 counties and four independent cities. The counties are Amelia, Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, King and Queen, King William, New Kent, Powhatan, Prince George and Sussex. The cities are Colonial Heights, Hopewell, Petersburg and Richmond. Federal statisticians at OMB assemble each metro from counties or equivalent entities around an urban area of 50,000 or more, then add outlying counties that meet a test of commuting to or from the center.
In 2023 the metro had 33,589 employer establishments and 575,588 employees in the week of March 12, 15.9 percent of the establishments in Virginia. Average pay was $67,600, under the state’s $70,069 and the US average of $68,342. Mid-size employers are more common here, with 27.8 percent of establishments at 10 to 99 employees; the state figure is 26.4 percent and the national one 24.6 percent. The Virginia page sets Richmond beside the state’s other metros.
The first seven rows are the metro’s highest concentrations against the US among the sectors we track. Dental and insurance offices follow because both pay above the US average. Then come the two largest employers in the table and the marketing consulting count.

Source: U.S. Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023 (employer establishments; employees are for the week of March 12; average pay is annual payroll divided by employees, computed by Growigami).
The last column divides each sector’s slice of Richmond jobs by its slice of US jobs. Counts leave out owners with no employees and most government workers.
Contractors and offices above the US share
HVAC and plumbing firms top the table at 1.73 times their national job share, with 465 establishments and 8,649 employees (HVAC marketing). The 364 electrical contractors run at 1.20 times (electrician marketing).
Richmond’s 586 law offices average $125,682 in pay, within $102 of the US average and above Virginia’s $112,390 (law firm marketing). The 559 insurance agencies and brokerages average $98,616, which is $7,785 over the US figure (insurance agency marketing). The metro’s 681 real estate offices run at 1.27 times the US job share (real estate marketing). Its 463 dental offices pay $70,316 on average, against $60,718 nationally (dental marketing).
Headquarters and the airport
The Greater Richmond Partnership counted 12 Fortune 1000 headquarters in the region on the 2026 list, six of them in the Fortune 500. By its count that ranks the region 8th nationally for Fortune 1000 headquarters and 11th for the Fortune 500 (June 2026). Performance Food Group leads at No. 80, with $59.9 billion in revenue, and CarMax follows at No. 162. Dominion Energy, CarMax and Performance Food Group list Richmond business addresses in their SEC filings. Markel Group lists Glen Allen.
Richmond International Airport reported 4,922,994 passengers in 2025, a record for the third year running. It also handled 223 million pounds of cargo.
The local agency base
The Census counted 65 advertising agency establishments in the metro, a quarter of Virginia’s 259, while the metro holds 15.9 percent of the state’s establishments overall. They employed 1,032 people, 1.25 times the national job share, and averaged $136,414 in pay against $106,841 for the US. Marketing consulting reads the other way: 196 establishments with 776 employees, 0.60 times the US share, paying $62,624 against $83,009.
Can an SEO company outside Richmond do the work?
For research, writing and publishing, yes. Workshop Digital’s FAQ makes the case for local, arguing that years based in Richmond give it knowledge of the local competition a remote agency lacks. Twelverays describes the downtown financial core, the Innsbrook office park and the Henrico and Chesterfield suburbs as separate local markets.
That knowledge has to reach the page either way. Most of it sits with your own staff: the neighborhoods and counties you cover, the questions callers repeat, what a typical job costs. Your CRO draws it out on video before drafting starts. An office earns its rent when you want meetings across a table.
What Growigami runs for Richmond contractors and law firms
In the first weeks your CRO and your staff turn customer questions into a page plan and a publishing calendar. From then on, AI agents draft each week from your team’s answers and the pages go out on that calendar. Your people spend a short call now and then on questions, and they keep the phone calls and new leads.

The page count and the AI answer check
Search publishes 200 pages monthly on the standard plan, or 500 on the larger one. Every page targets a Google ranking and a citation in ChatGPT or Perplexity. Once a month we put your buyers’ questions to those assistants and list the firms each answer mentions, yours or a rival’s. Our AI search optimization page explains the method.
Google Business Profile and Local Services Ads
Map listings belong to the Paid process, a separate $1,999 a month. It handles Local Services Ads, Business Profile upkeep and Google or Meta ads for media budgets to $25,000 a month, which suits HVAC, electrical and landscaping firms. Agents write the ad copy, and the media budget is billed at cost.
Outbound for suppliers to Richmond headquarters
Selling to insurers, utilities or distributors starts from a list of named companies. Each month Pipeline looks into 500 of them and drafts a note for every contact; your salesperson edits and sends. Interested replies come back to that salesperson within the day.
Adding a standing CRO review is optional, at $1,499 a month for monthly sessions or $2,999 for weekly ones. Without one, your team sets the priorities and the processes keep running.
When a Richmond SEO shop with an office fits better
You want meetings in person. Workshop Digital, headquartered in Scott’s Addition, says it likes meeting clients face to face.
Your site needs heavy technical work. A migration or a large cleanup of speed and indexing is specialist work, and Twelverays lists technical SEO and Core Web Vitals among its services. Growigami’s Search process writes and publishes pages.
You need a crew at your site. Growigami films people on a video call or cuts product clips from screen recordings. A Richmond firm can send a camera to your jobs.
Start with Search if your website gets visitors and too few calls. Ads or outbound can follow once the first process has paid its way.
Talk to sales. Give us read access to your CRM, and within a week we show you the first process we would build and what it would produce.
Questions
Before you sign with an SEO company in Richmond
What do Richmond SEO firms charge per month?
Starting figures run from $500 to $2,500 a month at the three top-ten firms that post one. Thrive's pricing page estimates SEO from $500, SEO.co says managed work typically starts at $2,000 to $3,000, and Whittington Consulting starts at $2,500, adding that many clients spend $4,000 to $5,000. Growigami charges $1,999 a month for 200 pages; 30 days' notice ends it after three months.
What does an SEO company do?
An SEO company learns which searches lead to your kind of sale. Then it publishes or repairs the pages that win them, so your site shows up on Google and in AI assistants' replies. Workshop Digital's Richmond page lists technical fixes, content strategy, local search optimization and performance tracking. Growigami concentrates on the pages themselves: 200 every month, each built from your team's answers.
Is SEO still worth it in 2026?
Yes, if your buyers search before they call, though the searching now happens in AI assistants as well as Google. G2's March 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers found 51% start their research in an AI chatbot. Our Search process writes for both, and each month we show which ChatGPT and Perplexity answers name you.
What does an SEO specialist earn in Richmond?
About $81,660 a year at the median, using the closest BLS group. BLS publishes no separate SEO code; O*NET files SEO strategists under 13-1161.01, Search Marketing Strategists. BLS reports pay for the wider group, market research analysts and marketing specialists, and its Richmond median beat the US figure of $78,760 in May 2025. Metro marketing managers had a median of $174,130.
When do Richmond SEO results show up?
After several months. Whittington's FAQ puts significant results at 3 to 6 months, and Twelverays expects 90 to 180 days for low and mid-competition rankings, longer for the hardest terms. The date Growigami can commit to is the launch, usually about three weeks after you open your CRM to us, with new pages each month after it.
Does Growigami guarantee rankings in Richmond?
No. What Growigami commits to is countable: 200 new pages a month on the standard plan and a monthly list of the AI answers that mention you. Whittington's FAQ also declines to promise rankings, on the grounds that Google's algorithm keeps changing. If those counts do not pay for themselves, 30 days' notice ends the arrangement once three months are up.
Can I read a page before it goes live?
Yes. You approve each page before it is published, and approved pages go out on the calendar agreed with your CRO. Some offices have rules on what a page can say about fees or case results. Agree those with your CRO at the start so every draft is written to them.
Does Growigami have people in Richmond?
No. Growigami is remote, with no office or staff in the Richmond metro, and it names no local clients. Your CRO talks with your team over video. If you want an SEO firm you can visit, Workshop Digital gives a Scott's Addition street address, and Whittington says it is based in the Richmond area.
