Block themes arrived with WordPress 5.9 in January 2022 and Full Site Editing. These differences decide which one you want.

How to install a block theme from a zip
Upload
Appearance > Themes > Add New Theme > Upload Theme, choose the zip, then Install Now and Activate.
Open the site
The homepage shows the template whatever Settings > Reading says.
Edit
Appearance > Editor > Templates > Front Page. Click a section and change its fields in the Block tab on the right; the page updates as you type.
Save
Save, then set the meta description with your SEO plugin: the theme prints the page title and leaves the rest to the plugin.
Questions about WordPress block themes
What is a WordPress block theme?
A theme built from blocks: its templates and template parts are HTML files of block markup, its settings live in theme.json, and you edit the whole site in the Site Editor under Appearance > Editor. Block themes became part of WordPress in version 5.9.
What is the difference between a block theme and a classic theme?
A classic theme uses PHP templates, the Customizer, widgets and the Menus screen. A block theme uses HTML templates of blocks, theme.json and the Site Editor, so headers, footers and templates are edited with blocks.
Which WordPress version do these block themes need?
WordPress 6.6 or newer and PHP 7.4 or newer. They were installed in WordPress Playground and checked on WordPress 7.1.3 with PHP 8.3 and on WordPress 6.6.10 with PHP 7.4, with no PHP warnings.
Do they work with page builders and other plugins?
They were tested without other plugins, so plugin compatibility is not checked. Each section is a standard block, and an SEO plugin is expected for the meta description and structured data.
Where can I get a free WordPress website template?
The WordPress theme directory lists free themes you install from the dashboard. Each of the 38 here is a free WordPress website template as a block theme zip: upload it in Appearance > Themes > Upload Theme and the homepage is there, including one page designs.
Are these WordPress block themes free?
All 38 are free zips with no account or payment. Free to use and adapt for personal and commercial sites.
How do I know if a theme is a block theme?
A block theme has a templates folder of .html files and, usually, a theme.json file, and Appearance > Editor opens the Site Editor. In the WordPress theme directory you can also filter for block themes.
